“Time Capsule” – A Galula piece that will hold on to memories until 2074

March 23, 2022 marks a historic milestone for Portugal: the number of days in democracy equals the number of days under the Estado Novo dictatorship. For that reason, this was the chosen day to kick off the official commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.

The ceremony took place at Pátio da Galé, with various tributes, musical moments, and awards given to important revolution figures. But, as the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, mentioned: “It is our mission to ensure that these 50 years of democracy are seeds for the future and not just a revival of the past”.

Time Capsule “100 years of demoracy”

The end of this gala was forward-looking into 2074, through the time capsule “100 years of democracy”. This object is an adaptation of “Vira”, a piece created by Galula, whose designers were born in the post-revolution period. This choice is due to the nobility of cork, an iconic Portuguese material known for being robust, durable, and sustainable. After all, the aim is for this piece to last 50 years.

The capsule was closed by the President of Portugal and will then be opened on the April 25 revolution centenary. Until then, it will stay in the museum of Guarda Nacional Republicana, in Quartel do Carmo.

Several symbolic objects are inside this capsule: a song by Bruno Pernadas, a manuscript of the poem “Março” by Alice Neto de Sousa, two letters addressed to the youth of 2074, and a copy of the newspaper “Público”. Representatives of the Portuguese state selected: a copy of the Constitution, the necklace of the Grand Officer of the order of Liberty, carnation seeds, and a reproduction of the constituent deputies’ signatures.

Honoured. This is how Galula’s designers feel about being part of this significant moment in Portuguese democracy. Jorge de Sena once wrote: “What is the colour of freedom? It’s green, green and red”, and we must add: “What is the material of freedom? It’s cork”.

We invite everyone to watch the ceremony here.
